Valentines Day is a holiday for celebrating love, in all of its forms.  The holiday began in the Middle Ages, when courtly love was practiced and knights defended the honor of their ladies.  The popularity of the holiday exploded in the 1800’s, creating many of the popular images we have for it today, such as hearts, lacy adornments, little cherubs, and the tradition of giving cards with poems inside.  

This era was also a time when all flowers had deep and commonly known meanings.   Bouquets were carefully selected and designed to contain certain flowers in them in order to tell the receiver exactly what kind of feelings and intentions the sender had toward them.  While the language of flowers has died down, there is still a tradition of giving bouquets, especially roses, on Valentine’s Day.

So why go to a florist instead of picking up a bouquet at the local supermarket?  The fact is, those discount flowers you find with your groceries just aren’t as healthy.  They don’t smell as fragrant, they don’t last as long, and they are not professionally arranged to look absolutely stunning.  It’s worth the little extra for the quality of the gift.

Anthony’s at the Delta flower shop is a very popular, classy place to buy flowers.  They carry a wide range of flowers and are sure to please for this holiday.  Anthony’s had delivery services from the Ghost Ranch area to Camel Rock.  Their hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 to 5:30, and Saturday from 9:00 to 12:00.

DeeDee’s Bee Heaven has very helpful staff and a wide array of Valentines specials.  The Sweetheart Special is a package of a dozen roses and three balloons for $65.99.  The Plush Special is a stuffed animal, candy, and three balloons for only $25.99.  As an additional Valentine’s special, DeeDee’s offers discounted delivery for the packages.  With the holiday fast approaching, DeeDee’s is open Monday through Sunday, from 9:00 to about 6:00, though they may be open later of there is enough business for it.

Fairview Flowers carries heart design containers for $45 as a Valentine’s special.  Their delivery rates are highly affordable, starting at $5 for local and varying outside of the Espanola area.  They are open Monday through Friday, 9:00-5:00.  As a Valentine’s special, they will be open on the Sunday of Valentines Day and stay open late.

Floral Expressions/Hallmark can be your one-stop Valentine’s shop.  They have a Valentine’s package that includes a half dozen or dozen roses, a box of candies and a balloon.  Don’t forget their selection of Hallmark cards.  Floral delivery routes go all the way to Dixon, Abiquiu, Los Alamos, and Santa Fe.  Hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00-5:00, Saturdays from 9:30-4:00.  They will be open on Valentine’s Day as well.
